Smoke detectors are a crucial safety feature in your home. A well-functioning smoke detector can greatly increase your family’s chances of surviving a house fire. Unfortunately, most home fire-related deaths occur in homes without working smoke detectors. In fact, reports show that three out of five deaths resulting from home fires were in homes with no smoke alarms (38%) or non-functional ones (21%).

Many homes do have smoke detectors or alarms, but they often don’t work because of dead batteries or improper placement. Improperly placed smoke detectors can be as risky as not having one at all.

You can easily install battery-powered smoke detectors yourself, but be sure to place them in the right spots. If you choose wired detectors that connect to your home’s electrical system, it’s safer to have a certified electrician handle the installation.

To make the most of your smoke detectors:

  • Change batteries every 6 or at least 12 months.
  • Put smoke detectors in the right places.
  • If someone in your family has hearing problems, use detectors made for them.
  • Replace smoke detectors every 8 to 10 years.
  • If you have a lithium battery that lasts up to 10 years, replace the whole detector after 10 years or when the battery dies.
  • Make sure hard-wired systems have backup batteries, and change them every year.

If you are having a hard time deciding which smoke detector you need for your home, give us a call or fill out the form and we can recommend the best one for your situation.
